First Course in Medical Herbalism
36 hours reading, audio, and lab (projects)
Course objective: The course will introduce the student to the methods of study of medical herbalism, to five important categories of herbal action,  and to some uses of herbs in chronic or minor self-limiting illnesses.
Prerequisites: High school diploma or equivalent
Course length: This eight lesson course is to be completed within sixteen weeks.

Lessons (each lesson includes 3 hours of reading and/or tapes, and averages 1 hour of projects:)
Lesson 1.  How to study herbalism, herbal forms, and herbal actions
Lesson 2.  4 Alterative herbs.
Lesson 3.  2 Immune-enhancing and antiseptic herbs
Lesson 4.  4 Sedative herbs
Lesson 5.  2 Herbs for women
Lesson 6.  2 Energy tonics
Lesson 7.  Healing strategies, with case studies
Lesson 8.  Herbs and common medical conditions


Course Materials and Activities

  • This course includes 2 lecture-CDs, and an eight-lesson book of study material and readings.
  • It includes a resources kit, with 14 herb samples in either dried herb or tincture form. Also included are materials and instructions for making 3 tinctures of your own.
  • Course activities include reading the lessons, listening to the lecture-CDs, making 3 tinctures, making 11 teas, sampling the tinctures and teas and journaling your experiences with them, and 2 short essays.
How to enroll
  • Purchase the course study materials in the Distance Learning section of our Online Store
  • You will receive an application and an enrollment fee with the materials. Fill these out and send them in with a $10 application fee. This entitles you to student support and faculty contact for 16 weeks.
  • Work through the lessons and assignments, sending your projects and answers to study questions in after each lesson.
  • Tuition installments are due as follows: $30 after Lesson 1; $30 after Lesson 2; $30 after Lesson 4; $30 after Lesson 6.

Certificate
The certificate for this course will reflect 36 hours of continuing education.
